BAO AN TAILOR · MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Suit Measurement Guide

All readings are optional. Use the garment or body method relevant to you, keep the two methods separate and ask our team when unsure. You do not need to fill in the guide before visiting.

START WITH THE RIGHT METHOD

Choose Your Measuring Method

Use a well-fitting suit as a reference, or ask someone to help measure your body. Keep the two methods separate.

01
Measure a favourite suit

Lay a well-fitting jacket and trousers flat. Record finished widths and lengths; the collar point uses a shirt as its reference.

02
Take body measurements

Ask someone to help with body measurements. The final half-hem point is a garment preference, not a body circumference.

Helpful tips before measuring

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

A Few Essentials

Work carefully, do not pull the tape tight, and use the same measurement unit throughout one set.

Prepare your tools

Use a flexible fabric tape, a smooth surface, well-fitting clothes and a helper where possible.

Keep the tape comfortable

Measure accurately without squeezing the body or stretching the fabric.

Discuss your preferred fit

Suit ease, posture, fabric and style affect the final fit. Our team can review these details with you at the atelier.

MEASUREMENT GUIDE - 40 OPTIONAL POINTS

FLAT GARMENT MEASUREMENTS

Measure your best-fitting jacket

Lay a jacket that already fits the way you like on a flat table. The measurements below describe the finished garment, not your body.

01 / 15 POINTS
STEP 01JACKET

Collar (shirt reference)

Use a shirt with a comfortable collar. With the collar open and flat, measure from the centre of its buttonhole to the centre of the button.

Check: Flat shirt collar length, not your neck circumference.

STEP 02JACKET

Jacket Half Chest

Button the jacket and lay it flat. Measure straight across the front from side to side, just below the sleeves.

Check: Half width: do not double it unless the tailor asks for a circumference.

STEP 03JACKET

Jacket Half Waist

Button the jacket on a flat surface. Measure horizontally between the left and right edges at its natural waistline.

Check: Keep the fabric smooth without stretching it.

STEP 04JACKET

Jacket Half Armhole

Lay the jacket flat and use the photographed armhole opening as the reference for where to place the tape.

Check: Follow the curved area shown in the photo; ask the tailor to confirm this measurement.

STEP 05JACKET

Jacket Half Girth

Lay the jacket flat. Measure from the back centre seam across to the front edge at the level of the middle jacket button.

Check: Use the same button position for consistency.

STEP 06JACKET

Yoke / Across Shoulders

Lay the jacket face down. Measure straight across the back between the two shoulder seams.

Check: This is the jacket measurement, not a body contour measurement.

STEP 07JACKET

Shoulder Seam

Follow the shoulder seam from the collar-side join to the point where the sleeve attaches.

Check: Lay the seam flat; avoid pulling the tape past the seams.

STEP 08JACKET

Jacket Length — Outer Shoulder

Start at the outer shoulder seam where the sleeve joins. Measure down to the bottom hem.

Check: The starting point differs from the inner-shoulder measurement.

STEP 09JACKET

Jacket Length — Inner Shoulder

Start where the shoulder meets the neck. Measure vertically down to the bottom hem.

Check: Keep separate from outer-shoulder jacket length.

STEP 10JACKET

Sleeve Length

With the jacket lying flat, follow the outside of the sleeve from shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.

Check: Measure to the finished cuff edge.

STEP 11JACKET

Sleeve Opening Width

Spread the cuff flat and measure straight across its opening from edge to edge.

Check: This is a flat width, not a wrist circumference.

STEP 12JACKET

Sleeve Inseam

Measure the inside seam of the sleeve from the armhole join to the cuff edge.

Check: Use overall sleeve length as the main reference; this reading adds detail.

STEP 13JACKET

Bottom Hem Width

Button the jacket and lay it flat. Measure across its lower edge from left side to right side.

Check: Do not stretch or flare the hem while measuring.

STEP 14JACKET

Half Back Width

Lay the jacket face down. Measure across the back from the sleeve/armhole join to the back centre seam.

Check: Measure just one side of the back.

STEP 15JACKET

Jacket Back Length

From the point directly below the back collar, follow the centre back seam down to the jacket hem.

Check: Keep the jacket smooth along the centre seam.

FLAT GARMENT MEASUREMENTS

Measure your best-fitting trousers

Fasten a good-fitting pair of trousers and lay them smooth on a table. Many values are half widths, not body circumferences.

02 / 09 POINTS
STEP 01TROUSERS

Half Waist

Fasten the trousers, lay them flat and measure straight across the waistband.

Check: Record the flat width; not body waist circumference.

STEP 02TROUSERS

Half Hips

Fasten and smooth the trousers. Measure straight across the fullest hip level, between the two side edges shown.

Check: Flatten wrinkles without stretching the material.

STEP 03TROUSERS

Front Rise

Measure vertically from the crotch seam junction to the top edge of the front waistband.

Check: Use the front panel.

STEP 04TROUSERS

Back Rise

Measure vertically from the same crotch junction to the top edge of the back waistband.

Check: Use the back panel; do not substitute the front rise.

STEP 05TROUSERS

Inseam

Start where the inside-leg seams meet at the crotch. Follow the inseam down to the finished hem.

Check: Match the intended shoe and trouser length.

STEP 06TROUSERS

Half Thigh

With the trousers flat, measure straight across a leg at crotch height from the inseam to the outside edge.

Check: Half width of the laid-flat trouser leg.

STEP 07TROUSERS

Outseam / Trouser Length

Lay one leg flat and measure down the outer seam from the top of the waistband to the hem.

Check: Include the waistband in this reference measurement.

STEP 08TROUSERS

Half Knee

Lay the leg flat. At knee level (roughly 13 inches below the crotch in the source illustration), measure across the leg.

Check: Record the knee position used so a tailor can compare correctly.

STEP 09TROUSERS

Leg Opening / Half Hem

Lay the bottom of a trouser leg flat and measure straight across its opening.

Check: One flat-leg opening width, not its circumference.

BODY MEASUREMENTS & HEM PREFERENCE

Measure directly on your body

Ask a helper to take measurements while you stand normally. Body measurements are different from garment measurements.

03 / 16 POINTS
STEP 01BODY

Neck

Measure around the lower neck. Leave enough comfort for a finger between the tape and skin.

Check: Full circumference; do not tighten the tape.

STEP 02BODY

Chest

Stand relaxed. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the shoulder blades.

Check: Breathe normally; do not expand the chest unnaturally.

STEP 03BODY

Stomach

Measure around the widest part of the abdomen, often near the navel, without holding your stomach in.

Check: Keep the tape level all the way around.

STEP 04BODY

Trouser Waist

Measure around the body at the height where you actually wear your trousers.

Check: This can differ from the widest stomach measurement.

STEP 05BODY

Hips

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the hips with empty pockets.

Check: Keep the tape horizontal and comfortably snug.

STEP 06BODY

Shoulders

With a helper, measure across the top of the shoulders, following their natural curve from edge to edge.

Check: If wearing a well-fitting shirt, use the sleeve seams as landmarks.

STEP 07BODY

Jacket Length

Measure from where the neck and shoulder meet down to the desired finished jacket length.

Check: Stand upright with arms relaxed at your sides.

STEP 08BODY

Sleeve Length

With your arm relaxed, measure from the shoulder point along the arm to your preferred cuff position.

Check: Choose the finish you want before measuring.

STEP 09BODY

Bicep

Measure around the widest part of the upper arm, allowing a finger of ease.

Check: Full circumference, not a flat sleeve width.

STEP 10BODY

Wrist

Measure around the wrist bone with space for a finger.

Check: Full circumference.

STEP 11BODY

Crotch Curve

Following the body through the legs, measure from the top of the back waistband position to the top of the front waistband position.

Check: Compare with a comfortable pair of trousers if unsure.

STEP 12BODY

Thigh

Measure around the upper thigh near the top of the inseam with pockets empty.

Check: Full circumference; keep the tape level.

STEP 13BODY

Trouser Length

Measure down the outside of the leg from the trouser waistband to the desired hem.

Check: Account for the length you want with your usual footwear.

STEP 14BODY

Inseam

Stand upright without shoes. Measure along the inner leg from the crotch area to the floor.

Check: Take this reading without shoes.

STEP 15BODY

Knee

Measure around the widest part of one knee.

Check: Full circumference; one knee is enough for this reference.

STEP 16BODY

Desired Half Hem (garment preference)

Specify how wide you want the finished trouser leg opening when laid flat.

Check: This is a garment preference, not a body circumference.
