What to Check at Your Tailor Fitting

Use your fitting to check comfort, movement and the details of your garment. A practical checklist for suits, trousers, dresses and jumpsuits.

A fitting is a chance to see the garment on you and explain how it feels. It is not a test of your tailoring vocabulary. Start with ordinary movements and clear feedback, then let the team work through any adjustments needed for your garment.

Begin with the whole outfit

Look at the garment from the front, side and back when practical. Notice the overall length and proportions before concentrating on a single detail. Wear the shoes or underlayers agreed with the team so you are reviewing the outfit in a useful context.

Check movement, not just the mirror

  • Stand comfortably rather than holding a special pose.
  • Walk a few steps and sit down.
  • Move your arms naturally for the way you will wear the garment.
  • Tell the team about any pulling, restriction or unwanted looseness.

For a suit jacket or waistcoat

Discuss the overall jacket length, the sleeve appearance and how the front sits in your normal posture. If you have a waistcoat, check the layers together with your shirt. Explain whether the outfit feels more fitted or relaxed than you expected.

For trousers

Sit and walk to review comfort at the waist and through the legs. Check the line and length with the shoes you expect to wear. Point out your preferred shape without trying to turn a body reading into a flat garment measurement.

For a dress

Review the neckline and coverage, waist position and the way the skirt moves. Sit and walk to check comfort. Discuss the length with your intended shoes, and tell the team whether straps, sleeves or openings need attention.

For a jumpsuit

Check how the outfit feels as a whole when standing and sitting, as well as the neckline, waist and trouser length. Explain any restriction rather than considering only the top or the legs in isolation.

Agree what happens next

Before leaving, confirm which points the team will review and whether another visit is needed. The design and fitting needs determine the next step; do not assume every garment follows the same number of appointments. Remind the team of your departure or event date if relevant.

  • Confirm the adjustments discussed.
  • Agree any next visit directly with the team.
  • Ask what shoes, layers or other items would be useful next time.
